To my utmost surprise, I finish the effect and background faster, way way faster than I thought. Thanks to a helpful tutorial on how to make the fire, or else, I will be still struggling on doing it.
非常惊讶的,我比预期中更更更快完成特效和背景。这都多得某个关于火的教程,不然的话,我一定还在挣扎着。
I first sketch the direction of how the fire goes, then following the tutorial, sketch the basic shape in white colour. Using smudge with 90% strength, carefully smudge out the shape of the fire. Pretty easy. This time I didn't colour the fire, but I use feather instead. Outer glow is red and inner glow is orangey light yellow. Adjusting the layer type, opacity, contour, spread, size and everything, play around with it until I get a satisfied result. and there! Finish! I guess I use less than half an hour to finish that.
我先把火的方向简单地标明,之后跟着教程,用白色画上基本形状。用90%力度的涂抹工具,小心地抹出火的形状。挺简单的。这次我并没有特地上色,反而使用羽化功能。红色的外光效果和浅黄带橙的内光效果就足够了。调整图层、不透明度、轮廓、宽度、大小等等,弄来弄去直到我满意为止。呐!完成了!我想我在半小时之内就完成了。
Having done such an awesome fire, all of a sudden, I lose inspiration for background. I am stuck. Dark colour is already decided, then I try out with cloud, star, patterns, and finally exploring the texture, and comes out with something I think suitable. If I ever have stuck for an idea, this is a good way to get something out by playing around with different things that I have not tried before.
完成了如此完美的火,突然之间,我失去了对背景的灵感。瓶颈啊!昏暗的颜色是已经决定好的,之后我先试试画上云朵、星星、花纹,最后还探究纹理,才弄出我觉得适合的背景。如果以后我又面对瓶颈的话,这个类似探险和摆弄没有尝试过不同的东西是个不错的好方法!

Winter Rose - Colour 4

给盖亚天空的绘画比赛作品。冬玫瑰是属于比赛主办者。
I am so satisfied with the face now after readjusting the mouth and nose. I tried my best to make the eyebrow clearer, but rather constraint to its hair colour.
我对新调整的嘴巴和鼻子感到非常满意。已经尽力把眉毛弄清楚点,但是发色还是限制了很多。
Later, I added in the gem stone on the cloak, silver chain on the bag, and make the staff. When I am doing the staff, I do it in straight vertical pose, after shading the shape in its basic colour only I tilt the staff to fit the pose. I found it easier to do than start off from its tilt position.
之后,我加入了宝石在斗篷上、腰包的银链还有画上魔杖。当我画魔杖的时候,是画成直立的,上完基本色后在依照姿势调整角度。我觉得那样做会比从一开始就画倾斜的角度容易。
To me gemstone is a hard thing to shade. Again, I went to search for photos of the gemstones and also tutorials on how to shade gemstone. It is easier to shade gemstone if you are able to draw the gemstone shade in 3D or imagine it as 3D. The gemstone I am drawing is the kind that is a bit transparent, so to be able to draw the lines at the back require some 3D imagining skillz, especially if the gemstone is not oval or curvy. It happened to be the pointy ones, diamond shape. Anyway, at the end I got it done and you can see the crappy highlight of the biggest gem on the staff is actually the 3D line.
对我来说,宝石算是个上色比较困难的东西。我再次寻找宝石的照片还有宝石上色的教程。如果你能画立体的宝石或者能想象立体宝石的话,上色的时候会比较容易。我画的宝石是那种有些透明度的,所以为了能显现出背后的线条是需要一些立体知识,特别是宝石并不是圆形或弯曲的。它就是那种有菱角,钻石形状的。无论如何,最后我还是完成了,可以明显的看见魔杖上最大的宝石的糟蹋反光就是那个立体线条。
Lastly, the basic colour part for everything is done. Next one coming is special effect and background. After skimming through the programme for a few more times, I am certain that there is no way to do the special effect I want in SAI. So I will be moving to Photoshop for the special effects.
最后,基本的上色算是完成了。接下来就是特效和背景。再次浏览软件多几次后,我确定SAI不能弄出我要的特效。所以我会搬去Photoshop弄特效。

Winter Rose - Colour 3

Picking up what was left about... a month ago... DX. My term started, and do not have mood to do art. So only now I start picking up the pace and nurture the mood to do art.
继续从上次中断的工作…有一个月了吧…DX。开学了,所以没什么心情绘画。直到现在才开始调适和培养绘画的心情。
Last time, I predicted that I would have a hard time doing clothes strokes, and it happened. I tried stroking a lot of times, if I get the strokes correct, the soft and hardness of stroke is mess up; or if I get the edge of brush correct, the colour contrast is ugly. Finally, got the strokes, soft and hardness, colour contrast I want. The way I did was, first use hard edge like the previous colouring, and then reduce the density and alter brush size to apply second layer. The amount of density varies according to how soft I want the certain area to be.
上次,我所预感的必须重新涂那衣服无数次才能将笔触弄好的预言成真了。我尝试了很多次,如果笔划对了,笔触的硬度就乱了;或硬度对的时候,颜色的对照就很难看。终于,还是做到了满意的笔划、笔触和颜色。我所使用的方法是,首先利用和之前上色的硬度,之后降低不透明度和调整笔刷大小,上多一层颜色。不透明度的数目会根据我所需要不同的地方而改变。
FACE!! I think is the most interesting part of a person drawing, to me at least. I first do the eyes, nose then lips. I will go to a tiny bit more detail description next~
脸!!我想那是人物画中最引人注目的地方,至少对我来说是这样。我喜欢先绘眼睛、鼻子之后唇。接下来,我会解释得详细一点~
Eyes - The MOST delicate part of the face. They are said to be the 'window of soul'. It is so important that until the Japan's trend of big sparkly shiny eyes come about. Eyes is a very important feature to create impression of art. First, I use white to draw the whole shape, almond shape generally. Then, another layer to put the Iris. one more layer for the nicely curve eyebrow, and another for eye lashes. Have a pretty hard time with eyebrow curve and the eye lashes.
眼睛-脸部中最细致一个。被比喻成是‘心灵的窗口’。它就是那么重要到日本才会风行起大大、闪闪、亮亮的眼睛。眼睛是形成画形象的重要的一部分。首先,用白色描绘出类似杏仁形的眼白。之后,建新层上睛,多一层画上弯得美的眉毛,还有一层绘上眼睫毛。在画眉毛的弯度和眼睫毛时,困难重重。
Nose - My least favourite part. It doesn't have a new layer, but share with face, because all it needs is to create shadow and highlight for the 3Dness. Unlike eyes and lips where they are different colour. Nothing much to say, but it sure takes me a long time to get the horrible nostrils correct and the angle of the nose.
鼻-我最不喜欢的部分。它没有自己的层,和脸共用同一层,因为它所需要的只是影子和反光来反映出它的立体感。不像有不同颜色的眼睛和嘴唇。没有什么可以多说的地方,不过它的确也费了我不少时间把难看的鼻孔和鼻子角度弄好。
Lips - The sexiest part of the face. I first marked where the lips should sit on the face using face shadow colour. Then only start using pinkish red to draw the shape out. After that, I picked a darker colour to draw the outline and split the upper and lower lip. Picking back lighter colour, and start drawing random vertical lines, and use different density o soften it. Lastly, to achieve the watery effect, I search the google image to see how they reflect and try to immitate the texture to it.
唇-脸部中最性感的部分。我先用脸影在脸层上标着唇应该在的地方,才开始用粉红色描绘出形状。之后,选了比较深的颜色绘出唇线和分开上唇和下唇。再选回比较浅的颜色,开始在唇上随意地画上直立线条,也改变不透明度以柔化颜色。最后,为了达到水嫩嫩的效果,我用谷歌搜寻图片来参考和模仿它们的反射和质感。
Looking at what had done, there are still tweaking needs to be done for eyebrow and the lips. Because of the hair colour, the brow is hardly seen, so I will be figuring out a way to make it a bit more obvious. For lips, it is still not watery enough, and the angle is a bit weird. Next stage would be mostly minor tweakings mentioned and touch up on the smaller parts.
看着做了的东西,眉毛和嘴唇还需要调整。因为发色的关系,眼眉很难看清楚,所以我会找出方法把它弄得更明显。至于嘴唇,觉得不够水嫩,而且角度也有些怪怪的。下一步大概都会是刚刚提到小调整和其他小部分的整理。

Heirs to the Legend - Preliminary Planning
This, is another gaiaonline contest. This particular contest has a LOT of bishies which I will be focusing on male only. So after reading up the category and the characters, I just can't help myself to plan out the entries I would enter. Since this time I will be trying group art, I would have to really know the relationship between each characters. And for your information, of all stages, I love planning and research stage the best. XD
这,是另一个绘画比赛。特别是这个比赛,它有非常多的美少年,所以在这个绘画比赛中我只打算画男角色。读了分类和角色之后,我忍不住要作出参赛作品的计划表。因为这次我想挑战组合画,所以必须了解每个角色之间的关系。还有,给不知道的人,在那么多阶段中,我最最最喜欢的阶段就是计划和研究的部分了。XD
This is the simple guide I did after reading up the character's profile. But that is only their relationship part. From this simple Relationship Guide, I would know who to put together and who to NOT to put together.
读完了角色资料之后,这就是所产生出来的简单指南。不过这只是他们的关系部分。从这个简单的关系表中,就可以知道谁可以和谁在一起,谁不能和谁在一起了。
When talking about group art, and especially poster like, one of the important thing is the character's height. Unless all you draw is headshot. The owner has a pretty well explained profile, which I turn the height into stick figures for better visual understanding. By knowing the character's difference height in a group height would add different individualities on an art. Since there are more than 5, so it is better to have a simple visual guide to not make any mistake.
说起组合画时,尤其是海报类的,之中最重要的一点就是角色们的高度。除非只是画肖像。主办人已经有了非常详细的角色资料,之后我将得到的资料画成骨干人形来利用视觉想象角色们的差别。了解角色们的高度会增加图画的个人的个性。因为有多过5个人,所以为了不出差错还是先准备简单的图表以防万一。
Formation, in another word, composition is very important for group art. I call it formation here because this only focus on where the character would be put, composition includes all elements including pose and background. Since I like to achieve a grand showdown of bishies, so the V formation is would be most effective. Basically, either going by shortest middle, or highest middle. I chose shortest and put in consideration of the relationship. V formation, tidy is the point, so if you know the height relationship, you would be able to present the grandness of the formation. I also prepare another option incase the canvas would be toooooo wide. There comes the next 2 tier formation. This 2 tier formation is more friendly and make the canvas fuller, besides will not be affected too much by height.
阵形,或者是构图在组合图也非常重要。我称之为阵形是因为它只是注重角色位置的阶段,然而构图就包括了全部细节,如姿势和背景。因为我想达到华丽美少年登场效果,最能表现的就是∨阵形了。基本来说,不是最矮的在中间,就是最高的在中间。我选择了最矮的阵形,也思考了角色们的关系。所谓∨阵形,整齐是卖点,所以如果你知道角色们彼此的高度,你就可以表现出阵形的华丽感。以防我会嫌∨阵形会很宽,还多准备了一个阵形。那就是二阶阵形。这个二阶阵形比较有亲切感也能将图表现得比较满,还有高度差异也比较不容易受影响。
This stage doesn't take long when you have all the information ready. I like planning stage because that is the stage where your imagination go wild and source for ideas.
现阶段并不会费太多时间,只要你有充足的资料。我喜欢计划阶段是因为那是个可以让想象力自由奔放和找到更多点子的程序。

Basic of colouring is shadow and highlight. By using the light source guide, brush in where there should be shadow and where should be highlighted.
上色的基本是影子和反光。在光源箭头的帮助下,将应该上暗色影子和上浅色反光的地方涂上。
The first part I did was... the hair. I was so indulge in brushing the hair until now it is actually half done. Then the face, I have a hard time getting the shades right, but get it all the same. Comparing to the hair, face still need more refining details.
我先做的部分是…头发。我上得太入迷了,直至它现在算是半完成了。之后就是脸,费了我好多功夫才弄得对,不过最后还是做得满意。和头发比较,脸部还需要更多的细节。
I just notice at the middle of shading the cloak that I forgot a few of the outfit details. The gloves for example, and decided to add in the pouch although it should be on the other side. These smaller things were easier to shade and like the hair are already in half done stage.
在涂黑色斗篷到一半时突然惊觉我忘记了一些服装细节。例如手套,也决定加入腰包虽然它应该是挂在另一边的。这些比较小的东西比较容易完成,和头发一样已经是半完成了。
So what is left is the big trouble, the big area of cloak, sleeves and dress. Because of its big area, any tiny spec of mistake would be shown. I can foresee myself having to reshade the clothes for a lot of times until I get the strokes correct.
那么剩下的就是大问题了,那巨大范围的斗篷、袖子和衣服。因为范围太大,无论是多么小的差错都可以明显的露出来。我已经可以预见我必须重新涂那衣服无数次才能将笔触弄好。

Winter Rose - Colour 1
An art contest entry for gaiaonline.com. Winter Rose is a character belongs to owner of the contest.
给盖亚天空的绘画比赛作品。冬玫瑰是属于比赛主持者。
There are different ways of making the sketch lines lighter. Either using the opacity or changing the blend modes or use the dumb way of eraser with lower opacity. Then, the lines will not be obstructing your view when brushing.
要降低稿线的方法有很多。降低图层的浓度、图层种类或者是最幼稚的少浓度橡皮檫。那么,稿线就不会在上色的时候那么阻碍视线。
Using midtones for background while colouring helps, and sometimes when shading light things, darker background helps and vice versa.
上色的时候利用中等色调可以帮忙看清颜色。有时候,在描绘浅颜色时,较暗的背景可以更加显现颜色,相反的情况亦适用。
This time, I am trying the method of painting, as in lineless painting...at the end, which the sketch line are meant to be just guidelines and will be gone at the end of the final piece. I brush out the shapes of face, hair, clothes and hand. Notice that direction of strokes are pretty important, since the brush property I use could show what the material texture would look like when I further shade the area.
这次,我想试试绘画技巧,就是无线的上色…看最后的话,稿线就只是辅助绘画,在完成品上会消失。我先大略地画出脸,发,衣服和手的形状。注意笔刷的方向挺重要的,既然我用的笔刷数值可以显得出表面的构造,那么就能看出来在深层上色时将会变得怎样。
I only prepared 4 tones colour palette this time, to me is minimum. From lightest, Highlight - Midtone - Shadow - Ultrashadow. Using up to five or seven would be sufficient. Midtone is the true colour of the colour the area should have. I use midtone to brush the shapes, but sometimes use darker ones depending on the background colour, as long as I can see them.
这次我只是准备了四色调,对我来说是最少的盘。从最浅,反光 - 中色 - 影子 - 暗影。理想来说最好有五或者七个。中色就是要用的真正颜色。我是用中色来描绘这次的形状,但有时也因为背景颜色而用比较深的颜色,只要看到就好了。

Winter Rose - Composition & Sketch
